Archbishop Aquila came to celebrate Mass with the Regis Jesuit Community on March 16, 2018. He is the chief bishop responsible for the archdiocese of Denver, so it was a really big honor that he came.
In his sermon, Archbishop Aquila talked specifically about being able to encounter each other’s selves authentically. This means that everyone was created in the image and likeness of God and as his children it is our responsibility to look past race, gender, and sexuality and accept everyone for their true authentic self.
“Spend five minutes in silence reflecting on the crucifix,” Archbishop Aquila said regarding letting Jesus in during the Lenten season.
Along with this, Archbishop Aquila encouraged students to take five minutes a day to be still, reflect on the cross, and feel yourself in the presence of our Lord. If we do this we will strengthen our relationship with God and when we do, we will be able to truly be happy.
“The mass was very uplifting and taught me how I can just take five minutes everyday to grow closer with God. I’m so glad he (the archbishop) was able to come.” – Kylie Pendleton ’21.
“After the Mass, I really became conscious of taking time to be in God’s presence. I’ve tried to start being more aware of how I treat people and tried to be less judgmental.” – Caroline Linton ’21
“I think it was really great that the Archbishop was able to come to our school. He addressed some really important issues that affect not only religious life but everyday life as well. I think we should all be able to see someone for who they truly are and not profile them into categories.” – Maxine Fuselier ’19
