Effects on kids getting social media too early
What is the appropriate age for kids to use social media? It is a big issue today for kids to get social media at too young of an age, and they never learn to use it responsibly. It has been stated that nearly 56% of 11 year olds use social media. Personally, I never got social media until the summer when I turned 14. I felt left out sometimes and was mad that all my friends got it before me, but now that I look back I realized that I wasn’t always scrolling through apps on my phone all the time and I missed a lot of drama because I didn’t have social media.
Children should get social media around 12 years old and should establish a good relationship with their parents, so they are able to talk with them if anything goes wrong. They also should know their guidelines and the do’s and don’ts of social media. According to Protect Young Eyes, no child under the age of 13 for any reason should be using social media. It has been shown that children under the age of 13 are not responsible enough yet to be able to make the right decisions on social media.
Social media can be a big distraction or a reliever for many people, but this can have a negative effect on kids. Kids may stay up too late on their phones or damage their eyes from being on it so often. If you are too young to use social media, you may find yourself attached to it and miss what is going on in the world around you. However, social media presents a strong platform that allows children to learn about our society and to expand their interests.
Since social media is an open platform, many things are not restricted and mainly anything can go on it. A child may be scrolling through social media and will see something too mature that they are not ready to learn about yet. This is where restrictions come into play. Young people new to social media need to put their best foot forward in what is good for them to see and what limitations to take so that they don’t have to see these bad things.
Social media is a great place to learn and expand your creativity, but you have you have to know your limits and how to use it properly. At the end of the day, children are able to use social media when they are mature enough and know that the decisions they make on it matter. In all, it comes down to what the parent wants for their child and this decision can be made from signs of maturity, responsibility, and decision-making from the child.
