Story by Michael Manoogian ’20 and Cami Evangelista ’21
After an unbelievable season, Regis Jesuit only lost one game in Colorado and, unfortunately for the Raiders, that ended up being the State Championship game on March 10, 2018.
Although this didn’t go as Regis Jesuit fans wanted it to, it was still one of the greatest seasons Regis Jesuit has ever had.
The Raiders had a great start with the score being 18-5 with 3:25 left in the first quarter, but Grandview started to creep up. At the end of the first quarter, Regis Jesuit only led by 5 with a score of 20-15.
The second quarter was a turn of events. The ball was tipped out of bounds by Grandview but the call went the other way giving Grandview the ball. After that play, there were two back to back offensive fouls called on the Raiders with :20 seconds left in the second quarter. The momentum switched and Grandview went into halftime leading 38-37 in the 5A CHSAA Girls Basketball State Championship.
Once the third quarter started, the biggest lead either team had was five points until the final seconds of the game. Regis Jesuit had three starters foul out this game. Leading scorer of the season, Francesca Belibi, was one of the players that fouled out with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter.
The score was 65-61 with :1 second left in the fourth quarter and Jaiden Galloway was sent to the line for Grandview. She hit both of her free throws and put Grandview up by six which ended up being the largest lead either team had past halftime.
