On December 7th, the Regis Jesuit Wrestling Team played a hard-fought wrestling match against the Heritage Eagles in the Continental League, resulting in an incredible 64-13 victory for the Raiders. Numerous players such as Richard Carrier, Cayden McNellis, Daniel Lantz, Ryan Curran, and Darrell Barber stood out in the match, all recording wins by fall. After finishing second place at the Arapahoe Invitational, it was evident that Heritage had some tough competition. Although they put up a decent fight, it was clear from the beginning that Regis was going to find victory in this one, and what victory they found.
After securing a 54-23 victory over Cherokee Trail, the Raiders walked into the Guy Gibbs Gymnasium with a confident stride, with the pop song ‘Renegade’ by Styx echoing throughout the room. After taking a short walk around the Gym, they made their way onto the mat and started practicing before the big match, intimidating their opponents and sending a message to the audience that they were the team to beat. Even from the crowd, it was possible to observe the community they had both on and off the field. Emiliano Ramos Tovar, a first-year wrestler who is new to this squad, added onto this when he mentioned, “Everyone is so supportive there. Even if you’re not the best, everyone is still willing to help you grow no matter what their level is.” Another wrestler for Regis Jesuit, Charlie Wolpert, explained why he loves wrestling by telling us, ‘It’s like a very contact sport and everyone’s really nice there… it’s a brotherhood for sure.”
Additionally, everyone there is not just wrestling for themselves, but for their fellow teammates. Dane Anderson, a member of the team, is one of the key players when coming to brotherhood in the Regis Jesuit community. When asked about what motivates him to do well in these matches, he explains, “[I do it] just to support the team, you know. Because even if you’re out there individually, you want to make them proud and happy to have you.” Regis advises us to be ‘Men and Women with and for others,’ and it is clear that this Wrestling Team does just that. Knowing the amount of brotherhood they have within them; it is becoming apparent that this team will be very successful this season both on and off the mat.
