If you’ve ever fallen in love with a place—like really, deeply loved it—you’ll get why Emmie Hudson started her own clothing brand. She’s a high school senior, but also the owner of Lowkey Local, a small business that’s all about her favorite place in the world: Nantucket.
“I’ve been going to Nantucket with my family for as long as I can remember,” Emmie told me. “It’s always felt like a second home.” You could hear how much the island means to her, even just in the way she talked about it.
At first, Lowkey Local started as an idea to combine her love for fashion with the calm, coastal vibe of the island. But it quickly became something much bigger. “I wanted to give back to the community that gave me so much,” she said about 10% of Lowkey Locals profit goes to Nantucket conservation organizations. “But I also wanted to express myself—through clothes, designs, and building something real.”
Emmie didn’t just start printing hoodies overnight. When she first started during her sophomore year, Emmie took the time to do it right. “The first thing I did was get a trademark lawyer,” she explained. “I needed to protect my ideas before anything else.” From there, it was months of designing, meeting with embroidery artists, and figuring out how to make something stylish but still meaningful—something that anyone could wear.
Now, Lowkey Local sells hoodies, hats, koozies, and even stickers. You can find her stuff online at lowkeylocalack.com or in three stores around Nantucket, which is a big deal considering how small the island is. “People even reach out to me directly to buy something,” she said. “I keep stock at home just in case.”
Her favorite moment so far? “Selling the first hoodie. Someone I didn’t even know bought it. That feeling… it was just insane.”
It hasn’t all been easy. Emmie honest about the hard parts. “There have definitely been bumps in the road,” she said. Starting a business is a long and challenging process. “But I’ve learned that if you’re true to yourself, and stay authentic, people notice. That’s what matters.”
Emmie’s not just another high school student counting down the days until graduation. She’s building something that’s hers, something rooted in love, and something that others genuinely connect with. In college Emmie is majoring in Business and is excited to take on the new challenges and opportunities that come along.
“I just want people to feel like they’re part of something when they wear it,” she said. “Like they belong.”
And really, that’s what Lowkey Local is all about.
