The Regis Jesuit girls varsity soccer team stepped onto the field for their playoff match vs Fairview under stormy grey skies. They faced many things through the season…Injuries, illnesses, and unexpected losses had tested them, but they stood united, bonded by a ball and belief in each other. At the center of it all was Coach Wolf, calm and fierce, never letting the team forget who they were.
The whistle blew, and the match began at a blistering pace. Their opponents were fast, skilled, and determined. But By halftime, Regis Jesuit was up 1-0. Heads were held high, and for a moment, no doubt crept in.
They came out of the locker room blazing. But all the sudden Fairview scored an equalizer and the score was 1-1. Suddenly, the momentum shifted. The bench got quiet, the crowd was starting to die, but regis kept fighting. Suddenly Fairview took the lead to go up 2-1, heads started to fall, faces started to change, and the time was running out. “You could tell how the momentum shifted after their (Fairview’s) second goal.” Xavier Martin ‘28 said, getting a close view of the players from his role as ball boy.
Then the final whistle blew. 2-1. The season was over.
There were tears. Silence. Then, Coach Wolf gathered them in a huddle, arms around each other, and told them how proud he was and how hard they fought. “I could tell how much this game meant to them,” David Ejuwa ‘27 said as he witnessed the emotions running high postgame.
They walked off the field that day not just as athletes, but as a team forged through adversity, stronger than any scoreboard could ever show.
