Ouija Bored
SPOILER ALERT
The audience of Saturday the 25th October showing of Ouija seemed excited as the movie started up. It was the perfect time to watch a horror movie, soon before Halloween. As the movie played through, the audience seemed less and less nervous, when they should have been getting more and more nervous for the big scares to come.
As one of the few horror movies to be coming out in this Halloween time, Ouija was expected to bring scares, but without being insanely gory, as it is given the pg-13 rating. Sadly this expectation was far from being met. Olivia Cooke (The Quiet Ones) plays the main character, Laine, in the movie, whose father is conveniently out of town during all of the supernatural occurrences. Her and a group of friends are devastated when they find out that one of their friends, Debby, played by Shelley Henning (Teen Wolf), has hung herself. While watching the movie, it felt hard to believe that the characters were actually sad. They soon discover that she had used an Ouija board by herself. This is one of the main things you at not supposed to do. They find out that she has released a spirits into the house which have attached themselves to the group. They end up having to use an Ouija board to send the spirits away.
Director Stiles White (Knowing, The Sixth Sense) sure knows how to make a highly cliché horror film. It felt as if most of the characters exhibited very little common sense in most situations. Whether it be everyone splitting up throughout a house with no power and strange noises happening all around it, or investigating strange noises in the basement while home alone. There were several times when I thought to myself “DON’T GO DOWN THERE!!!” or, “why would you open that door?” Stiles could have made the characters actions slightly more believable, making the entire movie more enjoyable.
Most importantly of all, the movie wasn’t too scary, just eerie. The “jumpscare” that was attempted at the end was not at all surprising, but highly predictable and poorly executed. “Ouija” is currently four in the box office and has made $35,570,665 after 11 days of being in theaters.
