Sleep Vs. Homework

Finishing homework late at night is not always the best when you are cutting into your sleep time.

Teenagers sit at their desks for several hours finishing that homework that was assigned. The silence and the slight mumble coming out of the mouth reading over their homework. Sometimes the homework stretches late into the night cutting into their sleep time.

Most students spend their free time participating in activities or are at home finishing that last bit of homework. Extracurricular activities usually occur for several hours and then homework afterwards. Their isn’t usually free time in an average students day.
Most students should try and attain 8-10 hours of sleep a night to be ready for the day that is ahead of them but most teens are lucky to get 5-8 hours.
“I do homework until 10:30 or 11:30 every night,” Justin Thomas ’18 said, “then I go to bed after that.”
Getting a good amount of sleep every night can benefit one greatly. Getting 8-10 hours of sleep can increase energy and even prevent diabetes.
Many students have extracurricular for a few ours after school and cannot start homework until after dinner which is around 6:30.
“There should be a happy medium, they should still prioritize their activities and homework,” Thomas said,”but when it gets to the point where it’s not healthy anymore and your getting sick because of the lack of sleep then they should draw the line.”
According to excessive homework times it can also reflect difficulties like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or learning disabilities. If that student sacrifices sleep time to study more than usual, he or she will have more trouble understanding material taught in class and be more likely to struggle on an assignment or test the following day.
According to Regis Jesuit High School Elevate magazine 57.41% of Regis Jesuit students get 6-8 hours. 37.52% of students get 4-5 hours of sleep and 5.07% get 8 or more. Also in a study conducted by RJ Media 54.43% of students have 3-4 hours of homework a night. 25.44% with 5+ hours and 20.13% 1-2 hours.
Most students at Regis Jesuit High School state school/homework as their biggest stressor.
When students go to bed late and wake up early on the weekdays and go to bed late and wake up late on the weekends, the student is messing up their sleeping patterns. When you mess up your sleep patterns the body can’t keep up with different rest periods and won’t be in shape for the low amounts of sleep.
When somebody doesn’t sleep for a good amount of hours, the brain is not ready and able to forget things. Especially for a teenager, having the brain not be ready can effect the academic performance. If a student doesn’t get enough, the students grades may drop and even physical performance.
Students should try and attain a steady 8-10 hours of sleep a night to fully ready mentally and physically in the morning and the rest of the day.
