The Inside Scoop – The Freshman who does it all

By: Jack Lyon ’20

Whether he is scooping ice cream, playing lacrosse, or doing homework, Freshman Teddy Bender never slacks. Teddy is a tall, thin kid with a relaxed and likable manner. He is an athletic, studious and responsible 15 year old boy. Teddy has a job at Glacier, a local ice cream shop in Denver. For him, having a job was initially to make an extra buck, but now his focus is more about satisfying customers and building strong relationships. “My first thought was to get money for a car, gas, etc. but the more I worked, the more my perspective changed,” Bender says. “Now I want to get better relationships out of working there, the money is just something extra.”

Teddy started working at Glacier around a year ago. It was the summer before his freshman year and he was 14 years old. The summer soon came to an end, but Teddy’s job did not. He started school and continued to work at Glacier. Now as freshman year is ending, Teddy continues his job and encourages others to start working as well. “Having a job has helped me become a more well rounded, responsible, and has given me a better work ethic,” Bender says.

Unlike most high schoolers, Teddy is able to manage school work, athletics, and a job. Due to his keen organization and solid planning skills, Teddy successfully balances all aspects of his life: maintaining a 3.8 GPA , while working two days a week at Glacier and playing Lacrosse on the Regis Freshman team.

When asked how he manages it all Teddy said, “I fill out my calendar based on what days I have the most school work. This helps me maintain my priorities in the appropriate order.”
For Teddy it’s more than just maintaining, it’s about succeeding in every aspect of his life. When you walk into Glacier and order your ice cream, Teddy is going to give you more than just a scoop.
