On February 14, 2018 at 2:15 pm Nikolas Cruz walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and shot 17 people as well as injuring many others. He entered the Parkland, Florida school with an AR-15. Nikolas Cruz was then able to leave the premises and was finally found walking through a residential neighborhood. He was arrested at 3:40 pm. This tragic story has swept a nation that has 18 school shootings in these first two months of 2018. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting came as a shock to some people, because just last year Parkland, Florida was named the safest city in Florida.

Some of the students in our Regis Jesuit community was asked what their thoughts on this tragedy were.

“It was really shocking and unnecessary” -Zoë Butler ’21

“I was really disappointed that it happened and that it happened again” -Nia Taubr ’20

“Clearly we have failed as a community in understanding that we need to have better protection and protocols for these types of events” -Adam Alcaraz ’21

“I think that the gun laws need to change and that just because you’re upset about the way your life is going doesn’t mean you should take it out on others” -Riley Fitzgerald ’21

“I think it’s really upsetting and could have been easily prevented” -Jeanne Agenar ’19

“I am all for the second amendment, but it’s time for some change” -Aeden Price ’18

“In my opinion the Trump administration is giving priority to an old law instead of the children’s lives” -Amaya Rios ’18

As a community we need to keep the victims and the families of these victims in our thoughts and prayers.
