This highly anticipated new Fantasy/Science Fiction film hits theaters today, February 16th, and showcases big Hollywood names like Michael Jordan, Nupita Nyong’o, and producer/actor Chadwick Boseman.
Boseman plays Black Panther, officially named T’Challa, who returns to the isolated African nation of Wakanda after the death of his father. T’Challa succeeds to the throne to take his place as king, but is drawn into conflict with a powerful old enemy that puts Wakanda and the entire world at risk. As he is tested with treachery and danger he mustunleash the full power Of Black Panther and, with the help of allies, triumph over his enemies and save his nation.
In addition to Black Panther being the first black superhero, the film is also receiving notoriety for having a primarily black cast and a soundtrack packed with popular black recording artists including Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak., and SZA. The film has been described as possibly being “the most racial empowering blockbuster of all time” by The National. Jamil Smith in TIME Magazine adds”Black Panther is about what it means to be black in both America and Africa—and, more broadly, in the world. … Black Panther is poised to prove to Hollywood that African-American narratives have the power to generate profits from all audiences.”
