Seattle Seahawks, the team who had the legion of boom and won a Super Bowl with them, is now struggling to prevent an opposing team’s drive. They have suffered losses in 3 of their last 4 games having started off 5-0 simply because their defense couldn’t make stops. The defense has kept the Seahawks from breaking through the barrier and being the top team. They are now ranked third behind the Arizona Cardinals and the LA Rams in their own division. Seahawks Head Coach, Pete Carroll, was asked about the defense after the upsetting loss to the surprisingly good Buffalo Bills in a press conference after the game. “It’s just such a out-of-character game across the board, I don’t even recognize us,” Carroll said. The recent injury of Seahawks Strong Safety Jamal Adams caused some struggles against the Cardinals in their first loss in week 6. Adams was back against the Bills when they lost again in week 8. The secondary, who had been doing their job for a while, fell apart when they played Buffalo. ESPN Sports Analyst Stephan A. Smith said, “Seattle has a very flat-footed defense; they look tired and weak in all their games so far this season,” when asked about their defense after the Bills game. Throughout the first few games of the season the Seahawks secondary was holding up well. However, after the loss to the Bills, they seemed to have lost all confidence. Initially the blame was placed on the defensive line and how they have struggled to put pressure on the quarterback. It is now clear that the defense as a whole needs to be better. USA Today reports according to Elias Sports Bureau, “Through six games of the 2020 NFL season, this unit has been historically bad. Seattle has allowed 2,875 yards, the most in NFL history.” Despite the abysmal season start, they have also had good moments. The Seahawks defensive coordinator met with the players the night before the latest win against the Cardinals and Pete Carroll was quoted as saying he, “sensed this was different.” The Seahawks’ defense is now showing more promise as veterans adjust to new names on the roster.
