No Mardi Gras 2021
There will be no Madi Gras Parades taking place in February, 2021 due to the spread of Covid 19, as Mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell released November 17th. The well known holiday known for its extravagant parties and parades, is canceled in hope to prevent the spread of the virus, but the celebration still goes on.
Mardi Gras is a huge tourist hot spot and people from all over the country come to celebrate this holiday in Louisiana. With the increasing Covid cases this religious holiday is going to look different.
According to CNN news, Beau Tidwell the communications director for the mayor said, “So we certainly want to move forward and find ways that we can celebrate, and we can mark this occasion, we have to do so safely. We have … 10 more deaths in the last two weeks. The positivity rate doubled last week.”
The mayor is reaching out to people for ideas on what their next steps should be and asking for surveys on how this holiday still could go on safely. Such as virtual zooms for parades, decorating houses as floats, and walking parades are being considered.
As NBC news 15 released, Tidwell the mayor’s spokesman says, “ I don’t think that should be a surprise to anyone that this is a consideration and this is the bounds we have to work…”
Due to no parades the city can go through struggle with bringing in money to the city.Their nonprofit organization like “The Roots of Music” will lose about 60,000 dollars in funding but executive director of this organization, Suzanne Raether says they agree with the decision that has been made but could make a impact on the city.
She says, “While it will have a dramatic impact on our finances, the roots of music fully supports our city’s decision to cancel Mardi Gras parades in 2021.”, CNN released.
With no Mardi Gras‘s people are disappointed because this holiday is very important to Louisiana and booking for 2022 is already in play. But as Tidwell says “It’s a holiday, and it’s going to happen one way or another”
