New Plans for the Hockey Season

The hockey season has been confirmed to start sometime late February amongst rising COVID cases.

Over the last few months the Regis’s hockey team has only been allowed to practice with no games. There are many safety protocols that the rinks are taking to make sure people stay safe.

We should be allowed to start our season earlier because we are all following the safety guidelines, and having a season that starts in February and ends in March won’t be the greatest season.

The main rink we practice at is The Ice Ranch and there were many things they did to ensure safety and within the last two weeks they added more ideas to keep everyone safe. Some of the things they added recently were split locker rooms which means the players are more distanced which can reduce the spread if someone were to be sick. We have two groups of kids that practice on opposite sides of the rink which also helps reduce close contact.

What if by the time February comes around the pandemic is even worse than now. Will they just deny the seniors their last season in high school. If we all continue to follow the guidelines we could potentially start the season early. If we keep the minimum amount of people as possible in the rink at once then that means it won’t spread as far if anyone were to have COVID.

Social distancing has been proven to work and that is what we are always doing in the locker room. Every study has show that If you actively practice social distancing the chance of you getting sick go way down.

Some people say It would be safer to not even have a season. But we tried that at the beginning and what happened people got sick no matter what it is going to happen at some point. The chance of you living is 99% and if you get it then that’s when you quarantine. Let the people who are willing to risk it go back to a somewhat normal life and the people who are overly scared let them be.

The point is we are all taking safety measures so I don’t see why we shouldn’t be allowed to start the season early. It’s not just about the hockey season it’s about trying to go back to normal let places and small businesses open back up under guidelines. Be safe and if we follow what we are told we can fight back against the pandemic.
