Regis Jesuit Girls’ Tennis Takes the Court

The Regis Jesuit girls’ tennis team eagerly kicked off their season this week, after last year’s was cancelled in response to the Covid outbreak.

“Last year’s season ended after spring break…we didn’t even get to play any matches. We had two practices and it got shut down, which was sad,” Katie Paul ‘22 said.

With the anticipation and hope of returning to a normal season this spring, the players had practiced hard throughout quarantine to maintain their skills.

“Playing matches and having a somewhat normal season,” was Paul’s response to what she was most looking forward to.

According to another player on the team, things were not completely back to normal like they had hoped. With current Covid precautions in place, the teams have to undergo adjustments to keep the players safe. Regis Jesuit has six tennis courts on site, which makes it easier for the players to social distance while playing.

“We are making the teams smaller because of Covid, and then just wearing masks while we aren’t playing,” Caroline Kessenich ‘22 said.

The team has become a very tight knit family built off of trust and friendship.

Tryouts took place from 4/26 to 4/28 with over 40 girls at the courts everyday. It is highly competitive, resulting in less than 30 girls being kept in total for both the JV and Varsity teams.

As this year’s current freshmen make up a majority of the girls trying out, they have hopes for making a team and carrying out a normal season throughout the rest of their high school careers.
