Drenched With Pride

Rain. That is the word that I would use to describe the recent Girl’s soccer clash between Regis Jesuit and Ponderosa. The game was scheduled to start at 5 PM but that was just the time the rain would start. After an hour of lightning delays the girls finally came out onto the field to warmup for a big game with major postseason implications. The Raiders started their warmups under a blanket of rain and when it came time to honor the program’s seniors the rain remained a constant. The girls knew that the rain would play a major factor and Julia Tierney ’23 emphasized the importance of getting a strong. “We knew we needed to get out there fast, because we knew they might call the game early.”

Finally at around 6 PM the game got underway with Regis receiving the ball off the kickoff. The girls started up a strong attack with senior forward Julia Tierney putting up a shot that inched wide. The Ponderosa goalkeeper made some saves to keep her team in it but finally after 10 minutes of play Tierney’s efforts were rewarded when she struck a beautiful ball from outside the box that just snuck in off the post to put your Raiders up by 1. For most of the first half Regis dominated possession but Ponderosa kept the game honest with some counterattacking chances and senior goalkeeper Abby Donovan tipped a ball over the bar to keep Regis in the lead. Her efforts were in vain when Ponderosa converted off a corner kick to level the score with 20 minutes left to play in the first half. The Raiders came out firing after the Ponderosa equalizer and junior midfielder Lex Meyer would quickly strike back with a close range finish to put Regis up 2-1 heading into the halftime break.

This goal would prove to be the dagger as the referees called the game with 10 minutes to play due to safety concerns associated with the wet field.

Regis got an important win to put themselves in a great spot for the playoff race while also sending their seniors off with a gutsy win at home on senior night. Senior midfielder Clara Kulick talked about her experiences with the program. “I’m just so lucky to have those group of girls with me, and It was a lot of fun getting to play with some of my best friends”
