Freshman Adapting to RJ Basketball Culture

We interviewed Liam O’Shaunessy, Coach Butterly, and Oliver Rowen on the culture in Regis Jesuit basketball.

As winter rolls around so do winter sports, including a RJ favorite, basketball. The basketball program welcomes the freshman to their program. As Coach Butterly states, “Freshman are like sponges they love to learn.” The legacy of Regis freshman basketball challenges the freshman to be great and live up to the expectations of the program. Coach Butterly has coached other programs such as Bear Creek and he says Regis’ program is very special.

Liam O’Shaughnessy, the team captain claims, “I hope to create a brotherhood within our team.” Throughout this season the character of the team will eventually show and with the backing of Coach Butterly this team is set up for success. It is hard as a first-year student to gain a sense of family when you just meet your teammates.

The Regis program is so great because the bond formed within the teammates is described as family. Through the next four years these boys will learn a lot about themselves. Even though personal growth will be a big part of it they will also learn a lot about each other. The bonds built between the boys will heavily impact their success on the court. Freshman year is a time for adaptation and learning for young athletes. The season ends late January, so the team only has around three months to play together. It is a big deal to be a part the Regis basketball program because many kids get cut. Coaches tell players to take everything seriously. We are excited to see what this team can accomplish in their next 4 years at Regis Jesuit.
