Regis Jesuit Internet Improvements Coming Soon

Connecting more than one device to the WiFi and faster connections are this year’s priorities

For the technology department and Mr. Kenny Ramos, this school year has been an especially busy one. Because of the new iPad program, Regis Jesuit’s WiFi infrastructure is undergoing a major upgrade process. Some noticeable improvements are already visible, while some are still yet to come.

“We are specifically focusing on the classrooms this year”, Ramos said when asked about infrastructure improvements. This past summer, wireless access points were installed in every Boys Division classroom. While the Girls Division only has one access point for every two classrooms currently, more access points are scheduled to be installed in the near future.

Since we have more access points installed, we should be able to connect more than one device per person, right? Wrong. For now, at least. Although the access points do help improve reception, they do not improve the speed or bandwidth of Regis Jesuit’s Internet connection. This is why students have been introduced to the one device policy this year.

So when do we get to connect more than one device? Soon! Ramos states, “By the end of the month or the first week of October, we will have a gigabit connection.” In layman’s terms, our Internet bandwidth will be 5 times greater than what it is now. When this happens, students will be allowed to connect more than one device to the WiFi.

Regis Jesuit is starting to phase out the big, bulky, and boxy computers connected to every desktop monitor in the school and instead use much, much smaller boxes called Zero Clients. The Zero Clients act as a portal for the monitors to access the servers of the school which house the computer software. This way, instead of using individual computers, all monitors in the school will be able to remotely access one big computer.

Through these improvements, students will be able to enjoy faster connection speeds while using more devices on the Regis Jesuit Network. Although Regis Jesuit technology is not perfect, the technology department is working hard to create a more reliable interface each day.
