Students Committing to College
National Letter of Intent Signing Ceremony
Displayed proudly on the glass walls of the college counseling center are triangular papers. These papers are commitments of seniors to colleges. On November 11, 2015, some seniors gathered for the National Letter of Intent Signing ceremony in the Z Theater. Five Regis boys and ten Regis girls have committed to college for sports.
All ten athletes sat at tables on the stage of the Z Theater and wore clothes representing the schools they were committing to. The Regis Jesuit High School coaches went down the line and gave a short speech for each athlete, recounting experiences from previous seasons and wishing them the best in college. The Regis girls’ golf coach, George Miller, gave a very nice speech for Mary Weinstein. She says she is very grateful to have had him as a coach for the past three years. After the actual signing of the NLI (National Letter of Intent), on the first level of the PAC everyone enjoyed cake.
Mary recounts her beginnings in gold. Both her dad and brother played golf before she started. Her brother was the best in the family, and being the competitive sibling that she it, she wanted to be even better than he was. “I started golfing in fourth grade,” Weinstein says, “and will continue golfing throughout college.” She is very competitive and enjoys seeing her hard work pay off. Golf is her way of relieving stress and gives her the chance to compete against her family and close friends.
All the athletes are headed in different directions after high school. Their reasons, all different. Weinstein is going to be staying in town continuing her education at Regis University. She was contacted by various college coaches throughout the nation, but the final decision came down to Xavier University and Regis University. “I chose Regis University because the team is very close-knit,” Weinstein says, “and the coach will help me succeed to the best of my abilities.” The Regis University campus is beautiful and the academics are impeccable. “I am proud to be a Regis Ranger in the fall of 2016,” Weinstein expresses.
