Morgan Carter excels.

In 2014, her short film, “Door to Door,” created in collaboration with Brielle Pray, was selected and screened at the All American High School Film Festival in New York City. She was chosen as the Salutatorian for the Class of 2015 graduation ceremony, stunning her audience into awe with a beautiful speech about passion. Now, she’s studying at the University of Denver with a full ride from the Boettcher Foundation.

Unsurprisingly, her freshman year of college is going extremely well, other than the standard homesickness, some very late nights, and a major cough that may or may not have bruised her rib.

“I love DU, actually. I think that the classes are really challenging, but the teachers are really helpful,” Carter said. “You’re able to have a lot of really cool, personal, and intelligent discussions which is really, really neat. I have a lot more intellectual conversations now than I did in high school, which is pretty awesome.”

She’s even broken out into the radio business with kxduradio.com. Her show is called “Gluten-Free Radio,” a play on her dietary restrictions.

“Now, every Monday, I play music, and I talk a little bit, and I just have a lot of fun for an hour every week. I love it so much,” Carter said. “It’s going to be Tuesdays at 4 next quarter.”

On top of her radio-host duties, Carter is studying to become a leader. Literally.

“I’m a part of a program at DU called PLP, the Pioneer Leadership Program. We all live together and take classes together, and we’ll graduate with a minor in leadership.”

This class gave her the opportunity to interview and write about an important figure in the community, in which Carter was able to talk to FOX31 reporter Shaul Turner and tour the studio.

“I got there with another friend of mine and we got to meet everybody there and got the behind the scenes look at everything. I’m actually trying to see if I can get an internship there too.”

In addition to her work in leadership, she’s also working towards a degree that will take her global.

“I actually changed majors already. I was a Biology major and now I’m an International Studies major, and I’m very excited about it.”

Her first quarter is coming to a close, and it has clearly been an exciting one. There is no doubt that she will continue to excel, both at DU and beyond.
