Imtiaz Stephen, Regis Jesuit Security Guard

Story by Ethan Buege ’19

With the increasing amount of gun violence all over the world in the last couple decades, security has become increasingly important in all settings, especially at schools. Imtiaz Stephen hasn’t been working here for very long, but he has already made a great impact and has many fantastic ideas for the future.

While the day to day routines of the security guards are not very interesting, they are crucial to maintaining the safe environment that we have here at Regis Jesuit. When Imtiaz shows up in the morning, he helps direct traffic in the parking lots. During the day, he checks the school grounds for any suspicious activity or characters and performs threat assessments to determine weaknesses in the security system that could be improved. “Anything suspicious that could wind up harming the kids,” is the way he puts it.

Prior to working here at Regis, Imtiaz worked in law enforcement for 15 years. He also spent five years in Afghanistan training police, running camps, protecting executives and running counter surveillance on Taliban. “It really brought my skill level up,” he said on his time spent overseas.

When asked why he returned to Colorado, he answered, “I decided to take the job here because I needed to stay home.” Imtiaz has an elderly mother whom he takes care of whenever he isn’t at school protecting the kids.

Having the correct values is very important for anyone working at Regis Jesuit, especially a security guard. “You have to have integrity, and you have to be caring, calm and focused on the job… You can’t be scared to make the ultimate sacrifice in defense of innocent people.”

Imtiaz mentions that his job is made easier by the student body here. “The student body at Regis is pretty incredible,” he says, “I like that I can get to know the kids and talk to them.” The nature of the school being catholic also plays a major part in the behavior that makes this school so great.

A very controversial issue that has been going around some members of the school board recently is whether or not security guards should be allowed to have firearms while on the job. Imtiaz is all for arming the security guards. “A gun is just a tool,” he explains, “It works in the hands of the person that knows how to use it correctly.”

One of the main arguments for firearms to be allowed for the security is that it is almost impossible to stop a perpetrator with a weapon if nobody defending the students has a weapon. “The only way to stope a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” he notes is his favorite saying. “When a parent drops off a child at school, they are expecting the school to protect them 100%” The only way that the school can really guarantee this is if their security guards are properly armed.

Imtiaz says that he has really gotten to know many of the students here and all he wants for them is the utmost safety and protection. “It would be the greatest honor to be able to protect these kids.”
