There are over 550,000 people in the United Sates who are experiencing homelessness, according to a recent report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and a great many of them are women. Women’s Homeless Initiative, run by Spanish teacher Ms. Vela, and Latin teacher Mr. Carroll, does the important work of helping provide shelter, bedding, and food, for a group of about twenty-five homeless women after school on Tuesdays. “It’s just a really rewarding feeling when you get to do tangible good, and it’s a good way to get your service hours,” said Noah Johnson ’20, when asked why he goes.
WHI happens on Tuesdays every other month at Cleaves Memorial Church, near City Park in Denver. Next Tuesday, May 15, is the last time that it is taking place during the school year. If you are interested, email Mr. Carroll(acarroll@regisjesuit.com) to find out more, and feel free to come.
