The Blocking-Crazy Firewall

Recently, many apps and websites have been blocked by a firewall that kind of had a mind of its own.

Probably the biggest, most noticed firewall-block is the ESPN Tournament Challenge app.

Any person trying to reach this app will be blocked, and unable to see their bracket.

Usually when a Regis Jesuit student is stopped from being on an app, they think that it was purposely done by a staff member.

In this case, this is not true.

Kenny Ramos, the IT director at Regis Jesuit, knows that this block was not an action done by a member of the Regis faculty. If it was, then he would have known about it.

“The teachers and staff did not have any decision in making the apps and websites unable to be reached,” said Mr. Ramos.

Even though this block was not meant to be made, it has positive effects.

Now that March Madness has started, students want to watch the basketball games and stare at their brackets all class, instead of paying attention or working.

If the app is blocked, then the students will be less distracted and get some work done.

“So this little problem that we have can actually be a good thing because it can help the students academically,” said Mr. Ramos.

At least until the Tournament is over.

Even if the tournament went on for a long time, RJ is getting a new firewall anyway. “We are currently in the process of getting a new firewall for Regis,” said Mr. Ramos. No more random blocks to websites and apps. Some apps will be available all the time.

“Hopefully this one will not make any decisions without our permission,” said Mr. Ramos.
