The 2023 boys wrestling team started off the year with two consecutive games, one where they lost to Cherokee Trail and then beat Heritage at the home opener. They only lost two matches while winning the rest by a pretty comfortable margin. One of the main contributors were the pins they had. One big pin came from senior leader Durrel Barber. DB the varsity wrestler, football player, and rugby player is playing in his 4 seasons of wrestling. This would be his second varsity season. DB has showed great leadership has he is one of the stars for the team and his one of the longtime vets. We talked to DB about his goals for the season, which he said were that “I want to make state for wrestling and make another state championship for rugby.”
Durrel Barber and the rest of the wrestling team have been working hard since the beginning of November. On the mat the little things matter, and DB likes to strive for perfection. Wrestling is one of the most mentally challenging sports and we talked to DB on how he gets through the practices, the meets, and all of the other challenges that come with wrestling. Wrestling is a mental game and to go 100% all of the time is the biggest challenge. Everyday he has to compete to improve. DB has had a good year so far but has had some ups and downs. He is getting better everyday and is a hardworking and talented athlete. To all of his coaches and teammates he has a big personality and brings his all to the mat every day. On the mat all his teammates are there to make each other better but when they are off the mat everyone is friends. DB can’t wait to continue to make an impact on the mat for his team.
