Sports Rivalries: One Community United

Although a sports rivalry causes a division, it actually unites a community more than it breaks it apart.

In a culture where sports dominate, many rivalries are born. Although these rivalries can draw large amounts of attention to their respective teams, they can mean a lot more than just the numbers on the scoreboard at the end of the game.

Picture those crazy fans who will dress in anything or endure the freezing cold just to be the biggest fan. These crazy fanatics along with other fans of stature are truly the life of a rivalry. Without the support of both teams, the game would not be publicized.

These fans are also for responsible for creating the tension between the two opposing sides. Trash talking creates a hatred between opposing teams, each side wanting to come away victorious both on and off the field.

“Human nature then kicks in,” Mr.Kent says,”and that is when we become territorial and defend our sides with truth.”

Because of our territorial nature there is often a great division and perspective “battle lines” are drawn. The battle over whose territory belongs to whom may often be the battler who wins the rivalry match that current year or the home team defending their home field.

But what good does all this hatred and aggression do for a community? A lot, actually.

Some may think that it would divide a community even more, but it actually does the exact opposite! It gives many people a talking point.

Strangers are able to connect through the love of their team. But what about those people who do not have a great love for the sport?

“It gives those kids who may not have a great sense of feeling, something to feel united to. It makes them feel a part of something special,” says Mr.Kent,”without having to risk anything.”

Think of all the spirit wear and memorabilia that sells both during and before events like these. Fans want to have spirit, which then in turn grows the local economy, through the sales of items.

But most importantly it creates traditions. Most rivalries date back many years and will continue for many years to come. It is those traditions that make the rivalries so special, and they are what makes each and every rivalry unique.
So rivalries like Notre Dame vs. Michigan or Regis Jesuit High School vs. J.K. Mullen High School can continue because of an unbeatable fanbase, and traditons that have been and will be in place for many centuries to come.
