No experience with photography? No problem. The ability to capture the moment or scene of anything that catches your eye and to make that image tell a story can be exhilarating. Upstairs in the mac lab, a group of students meet every other Thursday for Photo Club to do just that.

“The big development for us this year is that its Coed, so we’re really excited about having the girls division perspective and we’d like more girls to show up,” says Bruno.

Now boys and girls at regis Jesuit will be able to combine their artistic minds and capture amazing pictures.

But Photography is more than just taking pictures. It’s is an art which takes skill and is not easy.

” I like the feeling of it…. It reminds me of a painting but its also real life, so there is an ability to connect and say something”, said club moderator Mr. Bruno.

There are many different styles of photography such as nature photography, portraits, abstract, macro, and the list goes on.

Photography skills can grow and flourish here, no matter how advanced members start out.

“Its always cool when a freshman comes in and already has a little bit of voice or a vision of how they see things and its kind of cool to watch that develop and what they are interested in,” he says.

“The picture was the perfect poem because it was a fragment and a slice where you could go and actually pause life for a moment and sort of zoom in and see what it means,” says Bruno.
Students are encouraged to provide pictures for the yearbook, newspaper, and other school activities and publications.

“Club wise, I think the goal is to allow students to represent ascetically how they see and interact with the world through still photography,” Bruno says. “A way for people to express themselves and visually, so to speak, and a medium that everyone can use,” Bruno says.

If you don’t have a camera, do not be afraid, students can rent them from the club.

This club is all about learning and getting started and improving members skills with photography and with using the rules of composition.

This club works with different photography techniques, equipment, and strategies in relation to different photographic themes.

Landscapes, portraits, black and white, HDR, members discuss and work with it all. The club starts out with meeting in the Mac room at office hours every other Thursday. After everyone is together and organized, students share their photos using Flickr (a photography app to share pictures) and the students and teachers will discuss and critique the photos. Each time photo club meets, they receive a new topic in which to go seek with their cameras.

Twice a semester, photo club goes on two outings, such as the mountains, Larimer street downtown for photography and anywhere that may be possible for great pictures.

Today, students having all the technology and advancements, the art of photography has become saturated and many do not value the art of photography as much with all the social media and what not.
” When you look at things like Instagram and social media and how people use daily cameras on their phones, I think sometimes people miss the power of those images and it becomes a little redundant. The poetic value of those images are lost.”

Life goes by very fast and some moments people want to capture to remember. Bruno says, ” You and I on a day to day basis , friends, moving so fast we don’t really get to see the beauty and awe every single moment.”
