If you are thinking about getting a college athletic scholarship, the odds are against you. Since 2010 on average, the RJ girls division produces 15 division one athletes per year that get a scholarship. On the other hand, on average the boys division produces between 10-15 athletic scholarships per year since 2010. This is very good for both divisions as it is very hard to produce double digit athletes for on going years.
According to www.scholarshipstats.com, about 2 percent of high school seniors win sports scholarships per year, resulting in the average scholarship being less than $11,000. However, this is for division one athletes only. On average the girls division produces 3-5 girls with scholarships lower than division one.
However, the boys division produces approximately 14-17 kids with sports scholarships lower than division one.
Those are also very good numbers because according to www.scholarhipstats.com, out of all high school students, less than 5% of athletes pursue lower than division one sports. Specifically at Regis Jesuit High School, the girls division has two sports that stand out in terms of scholarships. Those sports are swimming and basketball. In fact, in 2011 7 girls alone received division one scholarships for basketball.
When it comes to boys however, the story changes. There really isn’t a sport that stands out for division one scholarships, in fact it changed from year to year. For example, last year lacrosse was the leading sport for kids to sign division one scholarships, but two years ago it was an even split for kids signing division one scholarships between football and swimming, with baseball a very close second.
Also according to www.scholarshipstats.com, the sports with the highest chance of getting you an athletic scholarship if you are a boy is fencing or gymnastics, and for girls it is fencing also with Ice Hockey as a second. There are also some sports that you have a higher chance of receiving a full-ride scholarship for. Those sports include tennis, Men’s football, Basketball (both men and women’s), Tennis, Gymnastics, and Volleyball. Also schools are limited it the number of scholarships available per sport. For example, a division one men’s basketball coach is allowed 13 scholarships, and a division one men’s soccer coach is allowed 10 scholarships.
It is very difficult for a student to get an athletic scholarship, but there are certain sports where the chances are higher than others.
