Day of the Dead At Regis Jesuit

Throughout the week of October 26th the Regis Jesuit Boys Division library will be holding the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. This will provide all RJ students and staff members with the opportunity to memorialize a deceased family member for All Souls day.

“This is just a fantastic way for the Regis Jesuit community to be immersed in worldwide culture and traditions,” Mr. Bruce Raymond, Boys Division librarian, said.

In Mexico, Dia de los Muertos is a national holiday dedicated to remembering those who have passed on. Traditionally during this time they decorate altars and gravestones with candles, crosses, images of the Virgin Mary, and favorite items of the deceased.

After the holiday has concluded, in some parts of Mexico, once the families have finished cleaning up the graves they also spend the night at the cemetery on the night of November 1st.

Everybody is welcome to visit the altar and make an offering anytime throughout the week. Also all students and staff are invited to bring in a photo of loved ones who have died, and post the photos on display. This is a time to commemorate times of hardship or honor those who have passed on.
