Secret Secretaries: A Thespian Tradition

Some of the secret gifts the cast has recieved

Running 26.2 miles is not nearly as hard as staying after school from 3-9 in the Steele Center’s theatre. After the first week of shows and getting through marathon week, the cast of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” has proven themselves worthy for a second week of shows. The kids were exhausted as the shows went on, but there were a little offerings along the way which made it all worth it: secret secretaries.

Secret secretary is a traditional gift exchange in theatre in which the cast, crew, and pit band members draw names out of a hat to be their secret admirer/santa for the week. Each show, their secret admirer gets them a little gift to lift up their spirits, and each night the gift gets a little bigger. From a bouquet of roses to plastic silverware, the cast has received a variety of gifts. “I’ve gotten candy, a wallet, and earrings,” said sophomore Sarah Smith. No matter the gift you get, it lifts your spirits high before the show.

“It is fun seeing what other people have gotten and it sort of lightens up the mood and gets rid of the nervousness before we go on stage,” said junior Owen Coleman. Not only do the little offerings make the cast happy, but they also lift some of the nerves as the cast prepares for the show.

No matter what it is, the surprises the cast every night and brings a smile to their face as the enter backstage for opening number.
