Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a band that was voted “Worst Band of the Year” 3 years in a row? Well, you need to meet 5 Seconds of Summer.

5 Seconds of Summer, also known as 5SOS, is an Australian pop/rock band that was formed in December of 2011 in New South Wales. Despite the name, the band only consists of 4 members: lead signer and rhythm guitarist Luke Hemmings, bassist Calum Hood, lead guitarist Michael Clifford, and drummer Ashton Irwin.

This band was first formed by just Luke, Michael, and Calum. They formed this band because they all went to the same school, Norwest Christian College. Ashton was later added after Michael sent him a facebook message requesting for him to join the band. They started performing out in parks and the streets, and were later recognized by the famous boy band, One Direction. Niall Horan retweeted one of their covers that they posted on Twitter, which later led to this small band joining One Direction on their Take Me Home Tour.

During this time, they became an overnight sensation with their hit song, She Looks So Perfect. They also came out with several other pop hits such as “Don’t Stop” and “Amnesia”. These songs and many others on the album led to them reaching #1 in 11 different countries. After the incredible success and top-charted songs, they debuted their second album, Sounds Good Feels Good in 2015, which topped charts in 8 different countries.

However, after this time, the band faded. They took a 3-year hiatus, which worried fans that a breakup was going to be in the future. But thankfully, that was not the case. In fact, many fans will argue that they have now come back better than ever.

After this 3-year break, they released their 3rd album, Youngblood in 2018. This became another huge success and was the top 3 albums in their home country. The debut song on this album, “Youngblood”, has over 1 billion streams on Spotify. They also reached big success with this album in many other places as well, which led to them being the first Australian act to achieve 3-number one albums on the Billboard 200 album chart. Youngblood was was 4th highest selling Australian single of the 2010-2019 era and is the 11th best selling single in Australian history. Along with the 5 million copies sold of this album, they have won many awards as well. But the most impressive one is the ARIA, where they became the first Australian act in 13 years to top the ARIA year end chart and remain the second longest stint in ARIA chart history.

Finally, in March of 2020, they released their 4th album, CALM. The album name comes from the first letter of each other their names: Calum (C), Ashton (A), Luke (L), and Michael (M). This album is one of the most awaited albums for the fans. This album is very important to this band, as they have said in many interviews. They talk about how they worked extra hard on this album because they wanted it to be a true reflection of who they are as a band and as individuals. Some of the most notable songs from this album are the opening song “Red Desert”, Calum Hood’s personal song, “Wildflower”, and “High”, a song that reflects the hard times in their lives. Even though they were not able to tour and promote the album like usual due to the pandemic, they are still very happy with the major success that has come from this album. Because of another big album, this made 5SOS the second Australian band in history to have their first 4 full-length studio albums debut at #1 on the ARIA albums chart.
