Eating and Reading: What is Breakfast and Books

With iPads, not many people read actual books. So, librarian Jamie Schombs took matters into her own hands.

Every Thursday morning, Jamie Schombs waits to greet the few people who come to Breakfast and Books in the Girl Division library. As the small, book club type meeting is at 7:15 in the morning, very few decide to brave it out to come and enjoy some treats Mrs.Schombs brings while reading some great books. They talk about the book they read over the last week, discuss favorite scenes, and decide on a new book for next week.

“ I began Breakfast & Books in an effort to spark students’ interest in reading recreationally. In the last few years, Book Club enrollment had fallen so far that the club was canceled. My plan for a redesign became the Breakfast & Books program that involves the fun, relaxed, social atmosphere” says Mrs.Schombs about why she started the meetings. That has definitely been achieved. Mrs.Schombs has definitely achieved that goal. She also helps plan the other events the library does.
