Every Wednesday at lunch, in room 127 in the Boys Division, the Diversity Action Group (DAG) meets. The student-centered club is enthusiastically moderated by Ms. Vela and Mr. Mixon. I was apprehensive how they would react to a pesky reporter. I walked in and I was welcomed by a group of students who didn’t know me but graciously welcomed me in. I immediately felt that sense of community that is prevalent here at Regis Jesuit.
After talking to the lovely Ms. Vela, she recommends four seniors for me to interview. I got the privilege of talking to four very different individuals from different walks of life who come together every Wednesday to discuss a shared interest. After talking to seniors Willam Roberson, Jasline Becerra, Erika Danzer and Lawson Douglas I had one big take away, everyone is welcome at DAG. “I would say DAG is a club, but more than a club it’s a community” says Jasline Becerra.
Next, I heard from Willam Roberson who gave me some insight into the club. “DAG invites everyone to come”. Willam talked to me a little bit about why he is the club. He told me that he felt sheltered growing up going to a Catholic school, and he wants to continue to broaden his perspective on people who are different from him, and he plans to do this by continuing going to DAG meetings.
Jasline and Erikia both shared with me their why. Why they are in DAG. Erikia says “I am minority at a predominantly white institution” she told me being in DAG made her feel like her voice is heard here at Regis Jesuit. Both Jasline and Erikia told me about their roles in DAG. Which mostly include planning events for underclassmen. Jasline and Erika are both thankful for the club and will miss it next year when they will be alums.
