Runner’s Weekly: Winter Running

Running while cold? No way!

Runners everywhere are not sure what to do come winter time. As it is colder and slippery surfaces, such as snow and sleet, many runners take off, or run only when it’s a warmer day or cool and dry out. As those days become more rare, we have to know what to do.

Some of the best runs happen during the winter but you have to know what to wear. It is always a good idea to have gloves and a hat, because your ears and hands tend to get cold before any other part of the body while running. Running tights are preferred, guy OR girl because it provides as a windbreaker and keeps most of the heat in. Next a warm workout shirt and a workout jacket should do the trick. You won’t have to worry about a big jacket even if it’s lightly snowing outside because your core tends to stay warm if you can just keep the wind off of you. Sunglasses also are a help when you’re trying to keep know from falling into your eyes

Shoes can be an important factor in winter-running, because no one wants to slip-n-slide all over the street while running. It is always a good idea to get new shoes before the winter season so you can have a fresh start to the new season, but if this is not an option there are other choices to pick from with your old shoes.

If it is snowing try to avoid the street and sidewalks as much as possible. They can be slippery and cause an injury. Try to run on dirt paths if you can, they have more friction and tend to have less ice and slippery spots. Your shoes may get dirty but do not let that stop you. After a winter muddy run just throw them in the wash when you get back, and they will be ready for you to get back out there.
