On Thursday, April 25, the Environmental Club held a trash pickup around campus. Together, our school wastes around 12 pounds of trash per day. That is around 2160 pounds of trash wasted per school year. That is a LOT of trash being wasted, and we need to do something about it. So, the environmental Club did. Around 25 students came early in the morning to take Lewiston way to pick up trash. They found and picked up items such as food waste, paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, wrappers, glass, and much more. This is beneficial for the environment because it can help prevent trash from filling up our environment, oceans, lakes, ponds, and more.
After Freshman Reese Crance was asked why she wanted to be there, she states “I was really excited to help the environment.” She picked up trash all throughout the morning. Something she thought would just be a fun and easy way to gain IIS hours turned into something more impactful than she thought. This sparked a new passion to want to be more mindful with where she’s putting her trash and how she and all of the people around her are impacting the environment every day. As the students were picking up multiple items of all sizes of trash, they slowly realized and put into perspective how much even accidentally dropping their gum wrapper on the ground can impact the environment and put the responsibility of cleaning up on someone else.
Our environment is very important because it is what we live in everyday, and if we don’t take care of it then it will be gone before we can go back and fix our mistakes and the damage. Get involved by joining the environnmental club. It is not just a club, it is an eye opening experience with excitement, curiosity, and learning.
