The New Sound of RJ

Part of the 2014 Year of the Arts

The new music facilities at Regis Jesuit have come with huge improvements for the arts.

The building has made it easier for the teachers because now they have four huge music rooms all for different subjects instead of cramming all their classes into one room. Teachers had a constant struggle of moving instruments back and forth and getting ready for their next class. The new classrooms have made it easier and they now have more time for rehearsing and just getting done what they had planned for the day.

Mrs. Karen Wuertz, the Humanities Dept. Chair, was very excited about their new practice rooms. “We have five new practice rooms that are in use throughout the day. Kids can just come up and practice.” These rooms are constantly being used by young musicians who want to get in some quick practice before they head to their next class.

By far one of the biggest and most exciting changes would be the beautiful new  Z Theater. The theater can sit 450 people and is equipped with a boys and girls dressing room and the scene shop. With the new scene shop we can now build and design all the sets for the shows on site.

Austin Fillipi, an aspiring musician here at Regis Jesuit uses the Practice rooms every day at Academic support to play his Guitar. When asked what was most improved, he said “The best thing they put in here is the instrument lockers. It’s such a hassle taking your guitar home and back every day.”

Mrs.Wuertz says that the greatest development for the music teachers is space. Previously the music program was stuffed into closets, portables, and storage rooms and now they have brand new facilities dedicated to music and the arts.

In a world of arts programs being cut, the music teachers find it really affirming that Regis Jesuit has built a brand new building dedicated to the arts. They want everyone to “explore the assets of themselves and their spirituality” as Mrs. Wuertz puts it.

The main concept that the faculty in the PAC wants everyone to know is everything that they offer. We learned that most of the RJ student body has no idea of everything that they have. While talking to the students and teachers that are in this building everyday, we got a feeling of true appreciation for what the arts stand for and how lucky we are to be a Jesuit school that beleives in the full education of the person.
