An Inside Look into Esprit de Corps

Esprit de Corps, a senior leadership club at Regis Jesuit, plans many of the schools activities including senior sponsored dress down days and senior-sophomore meetings.

The 49 current senior members from the class of 2016 meet before school on Wednesday’s with the club moderator Mrs. Prohira, lovingly known as Mrs. P by many of the students. During these meetings, the club talks about the upcoming events that are taking place around the school, and how the club will participate and/or be in charge of them. Besides leading events, Esprit de Corps is driven by Regis Jesuit’s mission statement, and strives to be all inclusive with the rest of the school.

“The best way to have a leadership club is to embrace all the kids,” Mrs. Prohira says. “Esprit de Corps is about cura personalis. It’s the spirit of giving and taking care of others.”

An example of how Esprit de Corps is centered around Regis Jesuit’s mission statement are the dress down days. While seemingly insignificant to some students, Esprit de Corps’ senior sponsored dress down days play a big role in the tuition assistance that a future Raider will receive. These dress down days, while only two dollars, go to support a future student who wishes to attend Regis Jesuit, but is not currently a financial option for them.

These two dollars quickly add up, totally almost 4,000 dollars by the end of the year. This money will then be given to that student who is relying on tuition assistance to be able to attend Regis Jesuit.

Another event that exemplifies Esprit de Corps focus on cura personalis is the senior-sophomore meetings. These meetings happen a few times periodically throughout the semester on academy periods in the girls gym. While the content of these meetings is confidential, it is a time for seniors to sit side by side with their sophomore sisters, and allow them to ask as many questions as they want. The gym is then transformed into an atmosphere of love and acceptance, and truly brings both the senior and sophomore class closer together.

“My favorite part [about these meetings] is watching the seniors embrace the sophomores; watching them become big sisters. You’re hopeful every year that each class feels that way, but this year, this class is exceptional,” Mrs Prohira said.

All these things just go to show that acts of leadership and the Regis Jesuit sisterhood go a long way, and Esprit de Corps is at the heart of that.

“It’s more than just a leadership club; it’s a community. Esprit de Corps is about developing the sisterhood,” Mrs. P concludes.
