Why Not Us? Girls Playing Boys Sports

For female athletes, seeing girls in boys sports is a rare occurence. They can’t compete with the boys, some may say, or you aren’t good enough.

But Jon Koslosky, the girls athletics director says, “girls have played a couple sports in Colorado that I’m aware of, wrestling, field goal kicker in football, and boys hockey as well.” These are just sports that come to mind for Mr. Koslowsky. He says that girls have the capability to play boys sports around the state. The girls division at Regis has two athletes that he thinks could play with the boys.

Mackenzie Austin and Cathleen Roe. Mackenzie is a two time state champion senior diver at Regis and Cathleen is a senior lacrosse player who is committed to Notre Dame.

“It’s just so much more physical and there’s just a physical element to it that girls lacrosse just doesn’t have, she’s pretty tough and super fast, but it’s just the physicality and strength and speed,” says Mr. Koslosky.

Yes, the physicality, strength and speed all have parts to play in boys sports, but if some girls are tough enough to play hockey, football and wrestle, then why don’t we see it more often?

The biggest reasons are just size and strength, most think girls aren’t strong enough, but what about Ronda Rousey, a huge female icon. She is a dominant female MMA fighter. Rousey says she wouldn’t count herself out against a guy, but the image of a girl possibly getting beat up by a guy on television is not a good image to put across. Joe Rogan commented earlier this year that Rousey could beat 50% of male MMA fighters.

The MMA star responded to the statement saying that she could beat 100% of them in the realm of possibilities that is. Manny Pacquiao was asked if she could beat Floyd Mayweather in a fight, here’s what he said, “I believe so, she’s strong, strong enough to beat Floyd Mayweather in MMA.”

Girls have the capability to play boys sports, but it is a very rare occurrence. The strength and size are what play the biggest parts, but if you have the skill set and those two things, you’re good to go.
